Announces the Upcoming Release of SPIRAL
ZONE: The Complete DVD Collection
All
65 episodes of the cult classic sci-fi animated series to be released
on DVD for the first time
Nov.
3, 2006 - SPIRAL-ZONE.com
announces the upcoming release of SPIRAL
ZONE: The Complete DVD Collection.
This 14 disc DVD box set will be available on December 5, 2006,
exclusively through SPIRAL-ZONE.com.
This
is the first time that all 65 episodes of the cult classic sci-fi
animated series will be released on DVD. Previously, only six episodes
were ever officially released on VHS.
"It
is a great honor to be able to bring you, the dedicated fan, all
65 episodes of SPIRAL
ZONE, for the first time, on DVD," said Chris
Millar, Creative Director of SPIRAL-ZONE.com.
"I have achieved my goal of ensuring that this incredible animated
series does not fade away into obscurity. SPIRAL
ZONE will now join the ranks of The Transformers, G.I. Joe
and other great 80s cartoons that have been preserved digitally
on DVD."
And
while Millar is the creative force behind SPIRAL-ZONE.com
and SPIRAL ZONE: The Complete
DVD Collection, he admits to not being able to complete his
dream of preserving SPIRAL
ZONE without the help of one man. "Pierre De Celles,
the Supervising Director of SPIRAL
ZONE, is the true hero of this story," said Millar.
"If he had not provided me with original tapes containing all
65 episodes, none of this would have ever come to fruition."
When
Millar launched SPIRAL-ZONE.com
in March 2005, he always maintained that the primary goal of the
site was to get SPIRAL
ZONE released on DVD. "I didn't care if another company
did it or if I did it. The bottom line is that I wanted to watch
and own all 65 episodes of SPIRAL
ZONE on DVD."
However,
it quickly became clear to Millar that he would have to be the one
to do it. "I wanted to take the official route and either purchase
or license the rights for SPIRAL
ZONE from Tonka. However, even after hiring a trademark lawyer,
Tonka would not return any of my phone calls. It was clear that
they had no interest in working with me and quite frankly, I couldn't
blame them. SPIRAL
ZONE was a financial flop back in the 1980s and I'm sure
that the idea of spending resources on a DVD collection twenty years
later would be laughable at best."
And
while Millar's passion for SPIRAL
ZONE got things started, he credits other fans around the
world for helping keep his interest level high. "The whole
reason I created the site is for people who enjoyed the show back
in the 80s and who wanted to see it again. I have received numerous
emails from fans worldwide who are dying to see SPIRAL
ZONE released on DVD. The feeling of enthusiasm from the
fans is what kept me going every time that I got bummed out by the
lack of response from Tonka."
In
July 2006, Millar received a shocking email that changed everything.
"I received an email from Pierre De Celles,
the Supervising Director of the SPIRAL
ZONE animated series. In addition to sharing some original
animation cels with me, he said that he had all 65 episodes of SPIRAL
ZONE archived on tape and that he'd be willing to send them
to me. Now, thanks to his foresight and generosity, SPIRAL
ZONE can now be preserved on DVD and enjoyed by fans worldwide."
Millar
also says that working with someone who worked on the original animated
series was a real treat. "I couldn't believe that I, a fan
from a small town in Canada, was collaborating with someone who
had worked on SPIRAL
ZONE back in the day. I would have never imagined it possible
when I was a kid. It's another example of the enormous power of
the internet."
And
while Millar is extremely excited about the upcoming DVD release,
he reminds people that it has not, in any way, received a blessing
from Tonka. "SPIRAL ZONE:
The Complete DVD Collection is not manufactured or endorsed
by Tonka," states Millar. "That said, I would like to
state for the record that I am not doing this to make money off
of someone else's intellectual property. I have done this solely
to preserve SPIRAL
ZONE, an incredible animated series that I, and many others,
enjoyed back in the 80s. Regardless of how the show did financially,
it is a great cartoon that deserved more than to fade away into
obscurity."
In
the end, Millar doesn't think that this fan-made DVD collection
is going to get any attention from Tonka. "The fact that it
took almost 20 years for a dedicated SPIRAL
ZONE web site to show up on the internet shows how many people
actually remember this animated series. But while the fanbase is
extremely small, they are dedicated and will enjoy reliving their
memories of SPIRAL
ZONE just as much as I have."
